Reggie has been playing lights out the last 5 games (10 points) and has been recognized by the NHL as the second star of the week. If you ask me it should have been the first star, but With Iginla reaching the 30 goals for 10 years in a row milestone, he was the sympathetic choice.

Sabres best Grinch, beat Christmas
So this is what it feels like to be in the top 8 in the eastern conference. I feel like i should be drinkin crystal and honking my horn up and down main street.
Brief Recap:What an exciting and terrifying game that was! After the second sabres goal my thought was "don't let what you did to philly happen to you boys" so of course it did, but they pressured like no ones business in the 3rd, Enroth makes a couple of MONSTER saves, and Stafford has a Pomminville moment to win the game in ooooovertime.
The Full Monty: This game has a high energy, great start to it with plenty of punishing hits delievered by both teams. Hate to see Kaleta go down after blocking a shot. I have come to realize that kaleta is the type of player you're going to get 50-55 games a year out of. In those games he's willing to run thru the boards, throw his body in front of shots, and do everything you could possibly want.
but its also going to get him hurt. To be honest, im ok with 55 games a year of Patty, contract extention time!
Also hoping ennis is ok following that crash into the endboards, didn't look too bad on the telecast, but this is also coming from someone sitting on a comfortable couch just finishing up some Mighty Taco, so i might not be the best judge of "not too bad".
Overall, good going not letting the lead being blown throw them off, them turned it back on and Stafford ended it with a pretty little bull move. Nice job sabres.
- Mancari was alright. servicable, but nothing terrific tonight.
- Boyes with zero assists... oh for two Bob.
- Connolly no points. and that completes the hat trick of wrongness. thanks for coming!

A win in min?
Tonights game in the Twin Cities is yet another in a long line of very important games down the stretch. Its a game in hand on carolina, and if the rangers lose to the flyers in regulation today, they can skip up to 7th place in the east.
Minnesota currently resides in 11th place in the western conference, but that 11th place has 74 points, 4 points more than the 9th place sabres, and (for Minnesota) only 2 back of 8th and 4 back of 5th.
After the come from behind victory from the B&G yesterday, i am expecting a sluggish first period, much to the stress level of lindy, but a solid effort the rest of the way out, but will it be enough? I see an overtime game here, and wouldn't be surprised in the Wild pulled it out in a shootout/overtime.
Prove me wrong sabres (please!)
1 for the money:
-It pains me to type this, but Tim Connolly, come on down, you're the next person to get off the shnide and score a goal!
2 for the show:
-WHAT? Brad Boyes is scorless in one game, BAD TRADE REGIER! haha. Boyes picks up another assist tonight
-Mancari Scores, just because he wants to make it on the playoff roster and a good showing today will help that.
4-3 min win in ooooovertime/shootout.

3 minutes. 40 seconds.
Another back and forth, which sabres team per period will show up type game, but you know what? They beat the 1st place team in the conference.
Tell me before the game that the sabres would win 5-3 today, and i would never have guessed that they were down 2-0 to start the whole thing back, but in a span of 3:40 in the second period, they came roaring back and scored 3 goals.
Excellent game today, and the B&G are only 1 point behind carolina and 2 behind the rangers, with games in hand on each now.
Playoffs? Damn right playoffs.

And to add to the post from a few minutes ago...
For some coworkers of mine, who have been especially hard on miller recently (and deservedly so for the first half of the year), these are the last 5 sabre's game:
March 1st versus rangers: 31 shots, 29 saves
Feb 26th versus Detroit: 37 shots, 35 saves
Feb 25th versus Ottawa: 31 shots, 29 saves
Feb 23rd versus Atlanta: 41 shots, 40 saves
Feb 20th versus Washington: 39 shots, 37 saves
35.8 shots per game, 170 saves on 179 shots = a .950 save percentage and a 1.8 goals against average.
"Big time (so much larger than life)"
Tim Connolly admitted it. Thomas Vanek admitted it. Eric Staal admitted it.
Tonights game is big.
Not quite game 7 of the playoffs big, but "vault into playoff position or trail by two games" big. It's times like these that the Sabre's, in the past, have shrunk. Theres a new feeling around the team with the ownership change and the addition of Brad Boyes, and more "go for it" attitude, but tonight's game will tell me a lot about whether this team is ready to take the next step.
Will it be the team that dominated the rangers for the first 20 minutes tuesday night? or the scrambling, edge-of-your-seat, hold on to something team that needed big saves from Miller in the final 20 minutes.
or, as per the rest of the year, will it be both? All i know is that this game will go a long way in the mind of sabres fans as to what to expect for the rest of the season.
1 for the money:
-Drew Stafford, GET ON THE SCOREBOARD.
2 for the show:
-I expect Tyler Myers to have a big game tonight, i think the kid is getting better under pressure, and look for crisp breakout passes and a few good rushes down the ice.
- I'm feeling bi-polar today, much like this team this year. Win? 4-2 sabres. Loss? 3-1 Carolina. It's a coin flip.

My arm is tired from all this patting of my own back...
I don't mean to brag or anything (of course i do), but if you'll notice my post below, i did, in fact, call a goal for Boyes, assists for connolly, and a 3-2 sabres win with Miller playing very well...
And since i am going to be wrong more often than not, i'm going to take a minute to enjoy this...
(wait for it)
(wait for it)
(wait for it)
Ahhhhh.
Back to the action. How about that Miller save at the end of the game? He had a pretty big game tonight, which was definitely needed, because the Blue and Gold's d-corp decided to take the night off. Whether they were nowhere to be seen, or making poor decisions, they are going to have to get that fixed up on this long road trip. I love Weber's aggressiveness, but he has to shore up his play asap.
But 3 games in hand and 3 points behind on the rangers, can you smell playoffs? I certainly can. Pull out a win in Carolina and this town might start to get crazy.

Game Night:: Land of a thousand sports teams
Big game tonight versus the Land of a thousand Sports Teams (LOATST), with 3 games in hand and 5 back before tonight, the Blue and Gold could make it 3 back with 3 in hand.
Should be an exciting game tonight, The LOATST will be welcoming new addition Bryan Mcabe tonight, with the Sabre's will be rolling out Brad Boyes. Expect a big game from both, especially Boyes. I expect him and Connolly to connect on a line immediately, and play well, for the first couple games, then Connolly to peter off again with about 10 games remaining. Mcabe has a blast from the point, so the sabres are going to need to clear some space in front of the net.
This is the first of two games this week that have serious playoff implications, if the sabres win tonight and florida beats carolina, the sabres are in 8th place, if we keep pace tonight then thursdays game against the hurricanes will be for the final spot.
Exciting times in Pegulaville.
One for the money:
I have to go with Mr. Brad Boyes on this one. First game on a playoff contender, and he sounds excited.
Two for the show:
Expect Connolly to ride the co tails of a pumped up boyes to a couple assists.
Miller vs Lundquist, Ryan usually plays his best when trying to compare himself to the games best. look for a 3-2 game tonight, advantage sabres.

Say it ain't so
Penner to Kings means (more than likely) no Connolly to the Kings. Which is a disappointment to most Sabres fans, i know. Should be an interesting last 25 minutes of the deadline.
The Boyes are back in town.
2nd rounder for Brad Boyes? Yes, please.
Hearing a lot out of the St.Louis camp that he can be a very frustrating player to watch, but coming to a fan base that had to watch Max A for several years, we are well prepared for that. I'm looking forward to a top line next year of Boyes (43, 33 goal seasons) Roy (70 point guy) and Vanek (2 40+ goal seasons), if they don't decide to move boyes to center.
Not to shabby, right?
I've heard a lot of "low risk" talk also, which i tend to agree with, but it is a 4 mil cap hit next year, and with Stafford still needing to be signed, i think the likelihood of a big off season move was just lowered significantly, but looking at the crop of free agent forwards available july 1st, it's unimpressive, and this might have been the type of move we made anyways, so why not get him for the playoff push?
Overall, good job Darcy.

Dis -a.point- ment
As the clever (ha-ha) title alludes to, the sabres did pick up a point tonight vs the Cadillacville Flaming wheels, but it doesn't feel all that good.
Also tonight, Montreal beat Carolina, so the Sabres now sit 2 points behind the Hurricanes with 2 games in hand. This home game could have been a very important 2 points before heading out on a season long 7 game road trip, but points are points and earning 1 will have to do.
It certainly looks like Sekera doesn't have any intention of going back into the press box. His growth reminds me a lot of Brian Campells, a couple of frustrating up and down years, and at some point (not right now..but maybe) it all just comes together into the complete package. Hopefully he doesn't follow this up with an uneven performance, and that this catapults him to a strong finish.
Stafford finishes with an assist.
Leopold was surprisingly scratched do to a slight injury.
Tyler Ennis had a pretty solid game, with some nice scoring opportunities.
i'd say 2 predictions came pretty close, and the other was injured. Now, its trade deadline time!

The Flaming wheels from cadillacville
The blue and gold face an extremely tough team from D-town tonight at Hot Sauce Blue Cheese Arena, and will need everything they have to beat the Red Wings.
Expect Miller in the net tonight, as even tho these are back to back games, they're both at home, so no traveling required. Also look for the defensive group to be tested heavily, detroit like to cycle low to pull everyone close to the net, then quick pass it out for a blast from the point.
Plus theyre starting to get healthy again, and Coach Mike Babcock and assistants were at the game last night scouting the sabres in advance. Expect this to be a very close game, and i am thinking overtime.
1 for the money
-I expect Drew Stafford to break his mini streak and hit the back of the net tonight
2 for the show
-Jordan Leopold has to have a better night than last night. Look for better defensive zone breakout passes from him.
-Tyler Ennis needs to shoot more often. Sounds simple, i know, but being referred to as a "more talented Max A" is not always going to be a compliment...

22 games remaining.
Big win tonight for the Sabres. After the Hurricanes and Rangers both won, the blue and gold needed a win to keep pace in the race for the playoffs.
Tonight started out more like how i expected wednesday's game to start out, high energy, and with the human wrecking ball known as Patty Kaleta hitting everyone in sight ( i have to admit, we're both from Angola so i have an extra soft spot for him). It was nice to see Cody M and Grier have some pucks go in, and i was glad to see Vanek out there with the Senators goalie pulled, more responsibility for vanek's a good thing, hopefully he'll have that "C" stitched on his sweater soon.
Plus it helps that i said earlier in the day that him and Connelly would have a big game... so the goal on the stat sheet makes me feel not so bad about that prediction....
Big game tomorrow against the flaming wheels from D-town, another win and they're %.500 for the homestand, and then heading out to a 7 game road trip with important games against the Rangers and Hurricanes next week.

Big Game Tonight
Another big game tonight for the blue and gold, against the sometimes hated Ottawa Senators, or much of their farm team as it so happens. There are a lot of people calling this a "classic trap game" but according to numbers guy Aaron Schatz of Football Outsiders, there are no such games, so no excuses tonight for the boys.
I expect the Pegula family to be in the arena once again (confirm by a "Tweetie Bird" herself, www.jpegula.blogspot.com ) and the crowd to be electric. Hopefully the swords can give the hometown fans something to cheer about again tonight.
Expect big contributions from the newly appointed assistant captain Thomas Vanek, and i would expect a better game from he who might be traded, Tim Connelly, in the second last game before the deadline, players who are pretty sure theyre getting traded usually have a good game or two before the trade goes thru.
Lets go Boys!

Half and Half
So after sleepwalking thru the first 38 minutes or so, the Sabres finally showed up for their new owner.
It's a good thing Miller was in fine form tonight, because even with all that energy in the building, even with everyone all excited by a nice opening ceremony, the sabres couldn't seem to muster the energy for the first period and a half, which has been a trend all season long. But enough harping on the first half of the game, after the Goose snapped a rebound home the sab's were off to the races.
Quality win overall, gaining 2 points on the canes, making them 3 back with 2 games in hand, and putting the thrashers in the rear-view. Most of us here in Sabreland are still unconvinced about the team, but with the cutting today of Rivet, and hopefully a deadline deal or two upcoming, it might turn out to be a decent year.
Enjoy your first win Terry!

Sabres Captian Craig Rivet Waived
Well that was quick.
Sabres Captain Craig Rivet has been waived by the team this morning. Here's to hoping someone claims this classy player and he get's a shot somewhere else. Props to him for never causing a scene about his benching, and props to the Sabres for finally cutting him free.

Peguladay Thoughts
One last Peguladay thought before moving on to the home stretch of the season...
Once the press conference opened up to questioning, did it feel a little... crazy girlfriend/boyfriend ish? "Terry Terry! Are you going to fix the waterfront? Are you going to buy the bills? Save us, please!!!"
Same sort of concept as a first date with a crazy person. All your friends are talking them up, everything seems like the perfect match, similar hobbies and goals, and then BAM! First date "how do you feel about marriage?" question pops out.
I need better out of you media, let him learn to love Buffalo before we let the crazy out.

Quotables
Some quotable's from this afternoon's press conference with Terry Pegula:
"From this point forward, the Buffalo Sabres' reason for existence is to win the Stanley Cup"
"We will aspire to be the best in the league at finding, developing and keeping players in the Buffalo Sabres family."
"If I want to make some money, I'll go drill a gas well, We're not in this to save money."
"Winning is not a goal, it is a belief."
"There are no salary caps on scouting departments."
"Buffalo is hockey heaven."

The Billion dollar man.
Don't tell my wife, but i have a man crush on a 59 year old married man...
"I bet Gil Perreault didn't know he could make a grown man cry" Pegula said during his introductory news conference.
In all fairness, Mr. Pegula has a lot of work ahead of him, but as expected he said all the right things during today's presser, including that he will take the spending cap off the Swords, and increase the budget for scouting and player development.
It's a great start for this franchise, now lets see if the players come out inspired tomorrow in vs ATL.

Big Day Tomorrow
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Please welcome Terry Pegula as owner of the Buffalo Sabres. This is obviously a new and exciting time to be a Sabres fan, and there isn't much that can be said here that hasn't been said already.
Hopefully this bring a new direction to a team that has been somewhat stale the past couple of years. With the subtraction of Connely (either this trade deadline or this offseason), Grier, and Rivet, it will hopefully clear enough cap space for the new owner to make a splash come July 1st. Do the Sabres need some serious help? Yes, but they are also not to far away from being able to make a run in the playoffs.
Stay tuned, it should be a fun ride!
